A number of South Coast Higher School Certificate (HSC) students have been listed among the high achievers across the state in 2021.

Any of them who thought they might fly under the radar from the local East Coast Radio newsroom were sadly mistaken.

In a massive achievement, Emma Rafidi and Maisie Staples from Ulladulla High School were named as 2021 HSC All Round Achievers!

All-round Achievers are students who achieved a result in the highest band possible (Band 6 or Band E4) in 10 or more units of courses in their current pattern of study.

The South Coast also had 28  HSC Distinguished Achievers and one Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) DUX and one VCE Honours student.

Distinguished Achievers lists the students who achieved a result in the highest band (Band 6 or Band E4) for one or more courses.  This is equivalent to an HSC score of 90% or more.

Lumen Christi Catholic College in Pambula led the way with 13 students on the list, followed by Ulladulla (8), Moruya (6), Carroll College Broulee (6), Bega High (4), Narooma (3), Sapphrie Coast Anglican College (2) and Eden Marine High (1).

Matthew Campbell from Lumen Christi Catholic College managed to be a Distinguished Achiever in six subjects (Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Advanced, Modern History, History Extension, and Music 1).

Ella Burke from Bega High said she was surprised to see her name on the honour roll.

“I wasn’t really expecting it but it was pretty cool to get that,”Ella said.

“I think for me it was just doing subjects that I liked and putting the time into them,”she said.

“If you enjoy them it’s not really work at all.”

Ella said she felt lucky to have gone to Bega High School and wanted to send a shouout to all of her teachers.

“To have had the people there (supporting me) especially for art and drama was great, Chris Blewett and Mika Appleton were incredible.”

When asked to  provide advice to future HSC students hoping to do well, the humble, the 17-year-old responded with this: “Try and establish good relationships with your teachers,” Ella said.

“Do subjects that you love because even if they don’t scale well, if you do well in them, it won’t matter at the end of the day.”

The South Coast also had one Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) student that made the honour roll.

The students listed in the honour roll, alongside the school they attended, for achieving a study score of 40 or more in a particular subject.

A raw study score of 40 would mean that a student performed better than around 91% of all students who took the same subject.

Kathryn Thoroughgood from Mallacoota College received honours in Psychology.

Congratulations to all HSC students who made it through a challenging 2021 and a special mention to those high-achievers below:
